Best Weekend Reads & Wines

Tobin Smith Editor
Thursday, October 24, 2013

You are receiving this e-briefing as either a friend of Toby & Marjorie Smith, a friend of our previous company ChangeWave Research or a subscriber to Next Big Thing Media and our investment newsletter Next Big Thing Investor PRO (not a subscriber yet? Click here.)

For more than a decade I curated my weekly “Best Of” opinion and news columns for staff and friends. This weekly ritual was purely a by-product of me reading six newspapers a day (NY Times, Financial Times, USA Today, Wall St. Journal, Washington Post, LA Times), dozens of magazines a week and of course tons of blogs and content aggregation platforms (Flipboard etc.) on Sundays. Wine tasting comes AFTER golf of course…

Idea curation is a hobby…just like wine. Many friends and subscribers have recently asked me “What happened to your weekly compilation of great ideas and your tasty & cheap wine finds?” Well…sharing my favorite articles, favorite wine and restaurant discoveries is fun and I missed it.

Today we launch Best Weekend Reads & Wines…to feed your intellectual and gastronomic appetite!

Wine Find

At our house, weekends are for golf/skiing, reading, get-togethers and gastronomic exploration.  Finding highly enjoyable 3-star wines at 2-star affordable price is a passion of mine…so let’s go!

Hands down our “go-to weekday” wine maker is Girard Vineyards.  We go back 20 years with Girard and its founder Mike Girard…who sold to Pat Roney in 2001. Girard is part of the Vintage Wine Estates which is really a wine-making co-op of dedicated winemakers.

The scale of being part of Vintage Wine Estates allows Girard to access big league grapes and make a LOT of varieties at discount prices…especially if you join their wine club. IF you find as we have a LOT of value in their wines…it is worth the deal. 20% off and no sales tax outside of California. Non-members get free shipping and 10% off for a case…not bad either.

At $35 retail…Girard Cabernet Sauvignon is the black fruit style and cassis notes we like. But on wine-searcher.com you can find the wine at $22-$24…now THAT works. Total Wine…the new king of discount wine…$23 with $1-$3 a bottle Fed-X charge depending on state and delivery time with full insurance. Out of state orders do not pay sales tax…another benefit.

If you DON’T know wine-searchers.com you are missing out the killer wine discount service in the land.  Wine-Searcher.com has COMPLETELY changed the retail wine industry…without question. My friends in the wine retail world who sell fine wines…collectible wines…would be OUT of business IF they did not match the wine-searcher prices within 10-20%...that’s a fact.

PS—we enjoy ALL the Girard wines…Sauv Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot. Girard from discount wine retailers is a high-end everyday wine that is available everywhere.

Cheers!
